It's a question paranormal investigators, enthusiasts, and even regular folks are asked quite often. I've gone on record, here on this blog, as referring to ghosts as fictional characters in all media. What paranormal investigators are "hunting" (proper term being investigating) is spirits. Do I believe in ghosts? No. They are fictional characters in books and movies. Do I believe in spirits? It's a question that's getting harder and harder for me to answer this past year.
I mean, what if we are wrong? Nobody likes to be wrong, because if you're wrong it makes you look like fools to those who were right. Nobody likes to look like fools, especially to those who we consider closed minded. But what if skeptics are right? What then? Do we still do this? Do we sell all our expensive equipment and move on? Do we keep going, even if we are wrong, just to find that one microscopic piece of evidence that will prove the skeptics wrong?
Hard to swallow questions, if you ask me. But I think sometimes we do have to ask ourselves those questions; not as a way to lower ourselves, but as a way to keep us in check. Because we still don't have the majority on our side. More and more people are accepting the skeptic way of thought. I, myself, have been stuck in limbo between the want to believe and the realization that all we're producing is a way to trick ourselves into hearing spirits or seeing spirits. The mind is a powerful tool that even our own minds like to fool us.
Do you ever go into an investigation thinking nothing will happen? I have and nothing happens. When I go to a place that's hyped up to be haunted, I experience things. But was it fact or the hype that made me see that shadow figure or made me hear that disembodied voice? Questions like these are essential.
I've heard people, fellow investigators, say that they believe in an afterlife because there has to be one. Has to be is a lot different than IS, because we can't go by HAS to, because we don't know if there IS an afterlife. We don't know these answers and the only way to find out is when we take an eternal dirt nap.
I constantly question if I even want to bother continuing investigating, especially with my the new mindset that I am in. But rest assure, no matter what happens, this blog will remain open. No matter what happens, I will always defend those who want to believe, because believing is a right. I will always be on paranormal investigators side no matter what side of the fence I am on. That I can guarantee you.
