The Grandfather clock ticks away the minutes. It won't be long now before my freedom. I watch it very closely, because in a way my life depends on it. Five minutes until midnight, until I'm free. I can already smell the sweat of my next victim walking down the side walk. In a few minutes I should be able to eat them alive, as it were. A pleasurable feeling comes over me, that will feel even better once I have a human body. I can feel my excitement growing as the chance to regain my old power draws nearer. There are few older, stronger, or more clever than I, yes, few, but they have not been seen or heard of in Eons.

I feel a jolt of pain that has been lost to me for a very long time. It's very intense now, almost unbearable. I can't help but smile. It feels like a spike piercing me. My neck cracks, my shoulders ache in their sockets and I am loving the pain. My body is not only  aching with power but with the need  and anticipation as well. The being just out of my reach is coming closer. I can sense the blood pumping within its' body, and that it is female. Ah, easy prey. I move closer to the door, loving the exquisite ache in my joints and the thrill of having my limbs obey my commands once again. I am drawing strength just from the anticipation.

It is midday and the  heat and brightness of the Sun bothers me. The scent of the females' blood is keeping me moving forward. I stop abruptly as she screams out in a tight voice, “Roger Alan, Get a move on!”  I relaxed a bit when I realize she has not been speaking to me but to someone else, someone following behind her, quietly, so quietly , that until now, I had not sensed them, this small, quiet, lagging child.

Now I have a problem: Which one? I know there are rules against taking children, but the more I sense its' heartbeat, the smell of its' blood, the more it entices me to go against the rules. I can feel the irritation the female feels for this child, as the child refuses to obey the commands of the female, its' mother. I can feel her anger. Yes, children are against the rules, too unpredictable.

I slow down, both in pace and thought. I am keeping my focus only on the female, even though everything else within me is drawn to the child. It must be the curiosity of it since, if I had noticed the child before, I would have targeted another. There are rules, and children are off limits so I have little experience even being this close to one. I renew my focus on the female, trying to summon my power for the transformation. It seems harder than I remember since my last transformation. I feel my anger escalating.

As I close in, the female looks over her shoulder. I can feel her unease, something is wrong. She senses me, and turns around. I use her fear to press more strongly against the shield that keeps us out of the world of mortals as my powers are approaching their zenith. My entire self is brimming with anger, violence and hatred. The doomed female stiffens as I enter her through her eyes. I ease in, as I now have her soul. She falls to the pavement. Her soul lays in my hand.

I feel disgust. This is a weak soul. I try to smell and taste it, but there is no smell or taste. This one will not last very long. I take her soul and let it slide down my throat. I begin to consume it, it doesn't last long. It's gone. I look down at the female. She is still. Like her soul, she is gone.

I direct my attention towards the child. I am curious as to what he will do. He gets on his hands and knees, beside his mother. He does not check to see if she is alright. He does not weep for her. Instead he balls his small hands into small fists and punches her right in the face. She doesn't respond, not even a fraction, as she now belongs to death. I know that a body cannot survive without its soul. The boy starts to punch his mother again. If I continue to allow this, he just might ruin the body before I can make use of it. I can now break through the barrier.

The boy stops and looks at me, he can now see me as I am. I look at him and he stares at me. He is grinning. I grin back, letting him see my oversized teeth, my fangs. He doesn't move, nor does he take his eyes away from me as I let him see exactly what I am. He finally looks away at a piece of rock on the pavement.

I use this time to enter his mother. I slide down her throat. It is tight. I almost get stuck and I can hear her bones popping as I go further down. I am almost too much for her to take. I continue pushing until I reach her heart. It flutters but just barely. She is not  all the way dead after all. There is a spark of soul remaining. I take it as I now make myself at home in my new body.

I then open my eyes to the world and see the sunlight and smell the earthly scents that I have missed. Then the pain comes. My new eyeball is reduced to ruin as the boy smashes the rock into my face. I try to move to get away but my new body will not respond yet. I must endure the pain. I use my power to heal this body I have taken over. My host body is bleeding badly. I am weak. I then feel the rock smashing against my teeth. My fangs. The pain is terrible. I use all my power to stand and I am finally able to begin my escape.

Blood is streaming down my face as if it is raining. Even if I cannot take this child, even if I cannot kill him, I can at least hurt him. I can make this a memory that will scar him forever and he will never  escape the nightmares I plan on instilling in his mind, horrid enough to last a lifetime.

I let him look upon his bleeding mother. I let him see all the blood and the ruined eyes and teeth. I leave him with the puzzle as to how and why his mothers' body will not die, to wonder if she will haunt him the rest of his life, to be haunted by the fear she may one day exact the same things upon him that he delivered to her.

I then turn away and start down the street. I hear what sounds like a bus coming down the street. I have to get away, something is terribly wrong here. I have never had a transformation like this in my oh so long life. It must be the child. There are rules. This must be some terrible side effect of the child being involved. There are rules and I did not heed them. I will never again let a child witness my transformation.

I need another host, this body is used up. I can feel myself falling to the ground. I can feel this females' head hitting the pavement. I can scarcely move. I  open my one good eye and the sun is blaring down on me. I can feel its warmth and its brightness. I can barely see and then the sun is blocked. I find myself in the shade of the boy.

I focus on the boy, this small, quite, lagging boy standing above me, once again with that same knowing grin. I can feel something trying to force its way down my throat. I squirm to try and get away but I can't move. The small child stares at me and that is the moment he allows me to see his true face. To see him for what he really is. I'm paralyzed with fear. It is engulfing me. I have never known fear before. I can't resist as it snatches up my hosts' heart. Now I  know what it feels like to be possessed. I was not the oldest, strongest or most clever of my kind.

Short Story: Missing Husband by Annette Bryant

Got a second short story sent to me. Two in one day, I like it! This one is sent by Annette Bryant, who is the wife of Roger Bryant. He's the one that gave us the spine tingling, cyberspace thriller called Unknown Zone. This one acts like a sequel to his story, but in the wife's point of view.

To any writers out there: I am accepting short stories at anytime, so don't be shy to send me yours. Just drop a line with your story in an attachment. Just please make sure that the grammar is good along with spelling. It must be in the paranormal category, but I will also accept horrors and zombies. It doesn't have to be gritty, it could also be a comedy or drama, or what have you.

Missing Husband
by
Annette Bryant

It started out like any other day, as they say in the movies and novels;  cliche' ,  but true. I left my husband, Roger, getting ready to make himself some breakfast and morning coffee as I left for work. If I had known I would never see him again, I might have kissed him a little longer and a little harder, but I had no clue as to the  events that would unfold in my absense.
When I arrived home that evening, I discovered my husband had left the computer on, and it was flashing a warning that something was wrong. Typical...when he got busy downloading music, collecting different pictures that tickled his fancy, and working on one of his numerous writing projects, he had a tendency to get sloppy and often downloaded numerous viruses and malware as well, which were always left for me to clean up. His car was here so I assumed he was out with some friends.

I made myself a light supper, changed into some comfy clothes and sat down in front of The Beast. This is what I called our old hunk of a computer. We talk about getting a new one but we seem to have some odd attachment to the dinosaur. I resigned myself to a couple of hours of intense work since I am not a computer tech, but learned one, and only one way, to clean the thing. It was lenghthy but worked and saved us money. All at the cost of my sanity.

I began by running our tried and true programs, and when that didn't fix the problem, I started going into individual folders looking for the culprit. As luck would have it, it was very good at hiding and I simply could not figure out what the problem was. By this time, I began to wonder what was keeping Roger since he was still nowhere in sight and hadn't called. He is usually very good about making sure I don't have anything to worry about. A check with his friends and local hang-outs turned up empty, no one had seen or talked to him. I realized he must be the local library. He sometimes likes to do his research the "old fashioned" way, with a stack of books, articles, whatever he feels is useful. Yes, that must be it, since he had crashed the computer again.

Speaking of the computer, my knowledge of how to fix a problem had been exhausted which left me with no other choice but to reformat and reload all our files. Ugh. This sometimes resulted in losing valuable things but I hated to pay someone else to fix it so I opted to erase ever single thing and start over. At one point, I swore I could hear Roger screaming, yes, actually screaming. But of course, that was impossible since he was probably on his way home from the library.

It has been 6 months and my beloved Roger is still missing. Local and state authorities say they have exhausted all leads but will keep the case open. I have packed up the old computer and it is sitting outside with some other items waiting to be picked up by a local charity. I finally broke down and bought a new laptop, but I have to admit, I sure miss that old dinosaur.

Well my day started out pretty much the way it always does, my wife had already left for work, so I headed into the kitchen and fixed my breakfast and a pot of coffee. I really wanted to get out of the house today. Since Annette was at work I could maybe go visit some friends, go to the bookstore or even catch a movie. I had three full days off from work, and there was a lot of things I wanted to do.

However, there was one thing I needed to do, I have been working on a story to send to my Publisher, well, not my Publisher, since I have never had anything published, but a Publisher none the less. So I guess another rejection letter probably wouldn't kill me. Besides, no pain, no gain.

However, I was dreading it, I was having so many issues with my old PC, sometimes I just wanted to smash it up and sweep it into the trash. So I figured it's not going to get done all by itself, so I went ahead and started the old thing up and waited for it to come on, that's when I noticed how slow it was moving and wondered “what now?” and that's when I noticed, on the toolbar, a message telling me that I had low disk space. Well I wondered how that could be. I really do not do a whole lot on the thing. Maybe some music, and some pictures I've gotten off the internet, and of course, feeble attempts at writing. So I decided to go through my files and see what junk I had in there I could delete. So after going through everything I decided to delete all of it, who knows -  maybe I could get it to run faster and more smoothly and who knows, perhaps I could actually get some work done, and maybe this would be the one to actually get published by someone.

So, I guess I had been working for maybe an hour, when my screen all of a sudden flashes and a large icon appears in the middle of the screen that says no disk space available, see unknown zone. “What in the world does that mean?  I've never seen a message like that before.” Well, now I'm pretty frustrated and decided I would just turn it off and come back in a few hours and calm down, maybe go out and have some lunch somewhere, anything – just to get away from this stupid computer, then come back and see how many other files I could delete and get back to work.

Well I come back from lunch and place myself in front of the computer, and wondered if maybe I picked up a virus somewhere and how much this was going to cost me to have it fixed. And how much writing time I was going to lose. Well, I start it up and go to “My Documents" Folder and see how much more clutter I can delete. But what I found instead was a message that stated I  no files could be found except for one and it was marked Unknown Zone right in the middle of the screen. I wanted to throw the thing against the wall, had to have been some sort of virus that had gotten into the computer. So, after about an hour of ranting and raving to the wall about how stupid and crazy this was, I turned the computer back on  and right in the middle of the screen in big letters: "Unknown Zone", so I move closer to the screen.

For some reason my hands are shaking and I am sweating from every pore of my body and have a very odd feeling in the pit of my stomach. So I do it, I double click on the file and the computer monitor flashes a bright blue and I feel an electrical charge run up my arm and the last thing I remember is thinking I hope I don't bust my head open on the table on the way to the floor.

When I finally recovered I discovered I must have been out for a pretty long while, because I was surrounded by darkness. It must already be nighttime and for some reason I'm freezing to death. I finally struggled to my feet and I noticed I didn't know where I was. Everything looked foriegn to me  and I'm surrounded by darkness and cold and I can hear clicking noises in the background. Then as I'm looking around I notice that I am looking out a window and it's daylight and very sunny, and then out of nowhere I see my wife had gotten home and she's sitting down in front of me.

But it she doesn't seem to notice me, and it appears she's typing on a keyboard and not only could I feel every stroke but I could tell what she's typing. This has to be some sort of nightmare. I'm trapped in  the computer somehow. That's when I notice it - in the middle of the screen in large letters "Unknown Zone". That's when I about lose it again. Now I'm frantic! I've got to somehow warn her! I have to let Annette know not to double click the icon and to get away from the computer. How am I going to save her if I'm trapped in here. That's when it hits me. I'm trapped inside the computer. I just might be able to get a message to her, so I look around, hoping to find a way to contact her when I find the chat section. That's when I can see it, even on this side of the screen.

I wonder if she can even hear me scream?
