Haunted Halloween by Chad Stambaugh

Halloween can be marked by an increase in the public's interest in all things paranormal, often accompanied by members of the public out on their own search for paranormal phenomena. But is Halloween actually a more paranormally active night?

There are no known research results to suggest that there is an increase in unexplainable phenomena on Halloween. People's perceived increase in phenomena may be caused by several contributing factors.

Firstly, there is likely to be an increase in people out on 'investigations'. These people will comprise a mix of experienced and inexperienced investigators. With more people out searching for phenomena, it follows that there would likely be an increase in reported experiences, the more people you have looking for something, the more likely you are to find it. But are these reported experiences genuinely paranormal? Probably not.

The increase in 'investigators' will be largely comprised of inexperienced members of the public, taking the opportunity to search out phenomena for themselves. These people are less likely to be analytical and rational in their scrutiny of experiences and are, therefore, more likely to attribute non-paranormal phenomena to the paranormal, due to their lack of experience. The increased expectation and anticipation of phenomena is also a contributing factor towards an increase in reported experiences. This is an effect that is largely diluted amongst experienced investigators, but more concentrated within the lesser experienced investigator.

The final contributing factor in this article is that of atmospheric change. October is often recognized as the month where the weather becomes considerably colder and more stormy weather conditions can affect experiences in a number of ways. Firstly, dark, cold, stormy nights are often linked to the traditional ghost story, therefore reinforcing the lay-investigator's expectation of phenomena, as previously discussed. Secondly, these weather conditions are linked to the production of greater static charges and the creation of negative ions.

These two factors can contribute towards the sensation of being touched, an often reported form of 'phenomena', albeit entirely naturally explainable.

The increase of inexperienced people conducting 'investigations' also raises several other points that must be born in mind. Without the necessary infrastructure to organize and conduct an 'official' investigation, many members of the public may result to visiting allegedly haunted sites without permission. This can result in charges of trespass, the creation of damage at such sites and tar the reputation of genuine investigation groups who do seek prior permission.

Another issue raised is one of health and safety. Wandering around in the dark, and often dangerous, places without suitable lighting and attire can result in personal injury and inadvertent damage to the property being visited. There were recent reports of a young man on a ghost hunt who fell asleep with a lit cigarette and burnt the entire building down, narrowly escaping with his life.

Unofficial investigations are disrespectful, counter-productive and dangerous. If you wish to go looking for phenomena on Halloween, or any other night of the year, please find a reputable group to join. Have a safe and happy Halloween!

Annoying Things About the Paranormal by James Paradie: I Grew Up (The "Ghosts Aren't Real" Whiners)

Remember my last Annoying Things About the Paranormal, called The God Requirement, where I talked about three words that drive some paranormal douche bags up the wall? Remember those words?

I just don't.

Those are not even the most hated. Sure, people hate it when you don't have an excuse for not believing in God, but they hate it even more when you say these three words:

Ghosts aren't real.

Whoa. Talk about a shit storm of the century. This drives people up and over the wall and into the nut bin of craziness. Some would argue that people should keep their opinions to themselves while others, like me, would make the argument to practice what you preach and keep your opinions to yourself. If you want things to be fair, of course.

Guys, I'm sorry, but this is where I gotta show some tough love. I hope you understand.

I know it's frustrating when someone says something you don't like, but as long as they're not being an asshole about it, I don't think it calls for any immature reactions like this:

Real mature. I'd ask Stone Cold if he even believes in spirits before placing his face on something he probably doesn't even endorse.

Or this one ...

Don't get me wrong I do understand, because there was a time and a place where these three little words pissed me off too. But I did something. Three words as well.

I grew up.

You don't like it when people don't agree with your opinions, but the thing is, it's only your opinion. Your opinion isn't law. You're not God over what people should think, so just throw that out the freaking window right now. This is also goes for the "ghosts aren't real" people as well.

It's crazy that people tend to make more of an effort caring about what strangers think of them than what they think of themselves. Why do you put so much time and effort caring about what some stranger thinks of ghosts? What's important is what YOU think of it. Not some random person. Not even a friend or a family member. YOU. If they don't believe in spirits, they simply don't. It's not harming you, is it?

Does this happen?

Stranger: "I don't believe in ghosts!"

You:

I'd be willing to bet nothing of any physical harm happens to you when someone tells you they don't believe in ghosts. If it does, then well, you suffer from something I like to call self-entitlement syndrome. Where you think everyone needs to think exactly like you do in order to be considered a good person. This is something America is complaining about right now is that people are over-sensitive about peoples opinions and it DOES need to STOP. People can't practice freedom of speech anymore, because of one-dimensional people. Oh, you can practice freedom of speech ... only if it's the popular opinion. And that's a piss poor way to live. People who are like that just can't be happy, because no matter where you go, no matter who you talk to, everyone has a different opinion. Get over that right now, because you're going to stress yourself the hell out if you hate or get pissed off over every single person who has a different opinion than you. I had to do it and I'm a much happier person not caring what people think of my opinions.

Is it great when someone agrees with you? Hell yeah it is, but it's not the end of the world when someone doesn't believe in ghosts. because a lot of people don't. A lot of people don't and paranormal investigating is still going strong. There's still conventions, there's still paranormal shows on TV, there's still books coming out like ice cream on a hot summer day. People saying, "ghosts aren't real" is not stopping it.

If you want to follow the (possible slander) Stone Cold meme, flipping people off because they have a different opinion than you, then whatever. Personally, I think you're a baby for overreacting, but I can't stop you.

Sometimes you need to be the bigger person and think about your actions as well as your reactions to what people say. No matter who you are, Zak Bagans to James Paradie, we all need to think about what we say and what we do, because no matter how big or small we are, we all represent the paranormal community. You need to allow different mindsets into the paranormal, because with different mindsets we get new questions, new theories, and new answers.

Personally, I'm on this specter:

It never hurts to just not give a shit.

La Llorona - The Weeping Woman by The Paranormal Guide

La Llorona is a legend about a beautiful woman who loses her children and is forever cursed to look for them.

She will take any child that vaguely resembles her own, and then drag them into the water in the hopes she may finally be admitted to what awaits us after death.

A Warning for Children

Urban legends come in all different shapes and colours, with retellings of the same legend taking on new aspects, and in some cases the end result is quite different from circle to circle. La Llorona (The Weeping Woman) is the same as all others – there is a central core to the story that goes largely unchanged, while certain details have been embellished or just completely added to for better effect.

This particular legend is told in the southern parts of the United States, but mainly hails from Mexico and South America. It is told as a warning to children to be good, not venture far after dark or else they will meet their doom.

Anguish and Terror

The legend begins with a beautiful woman by the name of Maria. Maria was well known due to her famous beauty, but she had a flaw - her vanity and need to be the focus of all attention. Maria ended up with her love, a rancher who was quite wealthy, and the two were married and had two children.

As time went on and the children began to be the focus of their fathers eye, Maria grew quite jealous. When the rancher began to completely ignore his wife, taking to long stays out in the fields around the house, Maria grew wild.

It was one evening, while walking out with her children that Maria realised what her husband was up to. They were walking along the path by a river when a horse drawn carriage came along side and stopped. There was Maria’s husband in the arms of another woman!

Rage and Despair

The husband turned around and spoke to his children but utterly ignored Maria. After the husband and his new lady had left, Maria flew into a rage and took her children to the rivers edge and drowned them.

As the children’s struggles gave way to stillness, and their little bodies started to be carried away down stream, Maria instantly regretted what she had done. She dove into the water, but of course it was too late, the children were beyond saving.

Despair

Out of despair Maria took her own life down in that same river, no-one knows how she went about it, except that her drowned body was discovered on the river bank the following morning. Many believe that the husband may have come back to talk to Maria and, seeing what she had done, had killed her. Although accusatory words were quietly discussed, it was not right to point the finger until the bodies were interred into the ground.

The funeral was held and Maria was buried in a long white gown. However it was not even one night after the funeral had taken place when the cries were heard by the river...

"Where are my children? Where are my children?" were heard long into the night, and for many nights since. Those brave enough to search out the source will find Maria walking the river banks, attempting to find her children.

Stay Away From the Water at Night

Stay away from the water at night ...

Locals say Maria’s spirit has been blocked from progressing to the afterlife until she can find her children… and this is where the danger lies. Children who wander down near water sources at night may run into La Llorona – the Weeping Woman - the name given to Maria. If they do, and they even slightly resemble her children, she will take them into the river in the hopes she will finally be able to move on.

Many missing children around Mexico and South America have been blamed on La Llorona.

As with any legend such as this details change over the years. Other versions have Maria and her love never marrying, yet having two children who are murdered when Maria continually presses for marriage. In this version La Llorona appears in a long, white, blood stained dress.

The legend of La Llorona has appeared in many movies and television series.

The Ghost of the Black Dog by SpookyLady InSanDiego

“When I was 7 or 8 years old,” said my friend Rose, “I woke up one morning to find a black dog next to my bed. It looked like our neighbor’s dog, Lucky. I screamed and ran out of my room. My brothers came running in to see what was wrong; I told them Lucky was in my room. They searched the house but the dog wasn’t there.”

Rose also told me about another ghostly dog she had an experience with. “My auntie had a dog called Skip,” she said. “When Skip died he was buried outside in the garden. My sister slept in my aunt’s bedroom and said she heard the sound of a dog panting and felt it walking on the bed. My aunt used to let Skip sleep on the bed with her, so maybe it was Skip’s ghost making a visit.”

Shades of Death Road, The Fairy Hole and More by Chris Chaos

SHADES OF DEATH ROAD: Allamuchy, New Jersey

The grim name of Shades of Death Road definitely made us want to visit this location as soon as possible. A quick research into the background and history of the naming of this road made it even more desirable to go and visit. One day we decided to take the ride to the legendary Shades of Death Road. This trip included The Fairy Hole, Jenny Jump and Ghost Lake. Shades of Death Road, located in Allamuchy Township, NJ is a 6.7 mile long road according to our GPS. All the street signs are firmly planted into the concrete ground due to the many attempts at stealing the signs; the thought did cross my mind!

The story is as follows, that back in the day this is the road that many Indians attacked the settlers on and later many carriages were robbed along this path. Shades of Death? Yes, many were killed along this road. Many of the local townsfolk would lynch the criminals that robbed travelers and then hang them up in these trees to rot and to also serve as a deterrent to future robbers. Also Malaria took its toll on the local residents before the invention of antibiotics and many people died. This area has a very deep and dark history. Yet another story in an attempt to explain the source of the name for this road was due to the packs of wildcats that used to roam the area. It is interesting to note that Cat Swamp Road is located in the area also.

One of the odder stories associated with Shades of Death road were that years ago supposedly a pile of Polaroid photos were found along the side of the road. The photos were blurry and out of focus but seemed to center on a female form. Soon afterwards a police investigation was launched but then apparently shut down as quickly as it appeared.

A quote from the person that found the photographs (they wished to remain anonymous, “My husband and I decided to take a ride down Shades of Death Road. We ended up on a dirt road that leads to it coming out of Frelinghuysen. There were tons, and I mean tons, of Polaroid photos scattered everywhere! They are very weird. There are pictures of women, none of them smiling. Almost as if they were caught off guard. Many of the pictures were of people laying down on something metal, and they didn't look to be asleep.”

GHOST LAKE (also known as Haunted Hallow):

Located along Shades of Death Road in Allamuchy, is a man-made lake created by two wealthy men that dammed the area off. The lake was built above an Indian burial ground, the name came about from the ghostly looking vapors that can be seen rising off of it on cold mornings. Upon of arrival here it was dark and pitch black. It was like looking off into a dark abyss. So we couldn't really see Ghost Lake all that much. But it was blacker than oil. Story is that during the day the mist that comes off this lake looks like ghosts. We took a few photos, but nothing all that interesting occurred.

THE FAIRY HOLE
This location was hard to get to; we had to hike along the right side of Ghost Lake to get to it, but not without tripping on the rocks, getting pricked by sticker bushes, tormented by bugs and sliding on wet leaves. Each and every time I was ready to turn around something kept telling me to just go a few more feet. Then low and behold there it was about 20 feet above me.
The Fairy Hole was a cave used by Lenape Indians many years ago when they were traveling around. I thought the cave would have been a little bit deeper, but it was pretty cool to venture inside of it. While inside The Fairy Hole I noticed the small stalactite formations on the ceiling; they’ve been growing slowly since the last Ice Age. The cave is about 10 feet wide and 15 feet deep and the floor is flat. A natural "chimney" in the rear of cave sometimes contains blind cave cricket. Scant evidence of Indian occupation has been found here, including a few pieces of pottery and evidence of a fire pit near the opening. When the cave was excavated in the 1930s by state archaeologist Dorothy Cross, thousands of mammal bones and fragments were recovered, among them the tooth of a giant beaver, that is now extinct.

JENNY JUMP is a state park and was the cliff where young Jenny jumped off to her death to escape from the Indians. Legend states that her ghost still haunts the forest. It is one hell of a climb to get on the top but well worth it when you reach the top. Getting back down is another story.

The Old Man and the Black Cat by SpookyLady InSanDiego

My friend Rose had a difficult start to her young married life. When her son Joseph was born he cried almost constantly. One day Rose realized that Joseph’s face looked like an old man’s. “I kept telling my husband I felt very strongly that Joseph was reincarnated and didn’t want to be in this world.” My husband didn’t think anything about it.

One day I was feeding Joseph when I looked up to see an older, bald man sitting on the other side of the room. I froze and my husband saw the color drain from my face and I started shaking. He asked me what was wrong so I pointed to where I saw the man sitting, but the man was gone. My husband hadn’t seen the old man.

I had the feeling the old man was the ghost of Joseph from his last life, coming to see himself in his new body. There’s a chance I was just exhausted from lack of sleep, being a new mother and having a fussy baby, but it seemed so real at the time.

Rose told me about another experience she had when her son Joseph was about two years old:

I was holding Joseph in my arms when I saw a black cat. The cat was chasing me around in circles! I screamed and finally it ran out the front door. My husband came in and asked what was wrong. I told him a black cat got into our flat and chased me around. He said the front door wasn’t open so it must still be in the flat. We searched everywhere but never found the black cat.

A Little Behind the Scenes of Scared Sheetless: www.jamesparadie.com is no more (the reason for the testing stuff)

I'm sure some of you MAY have noticed a strange post saying, Testing. That's all it said. If you were to try to find it, you couldn't. I deleted it, because the test was a success, kind of.

Why it was a success:

A third-party app called Networked Blogs posts everything for me in all the feeds I tell it to. So, my Facebook, NEPI's Facebook page, Scared Sheetless' Facebook page - are all on it. Anything I put on Scared Sheetless, Networked Blogs takes care of making sure it goes everywhere for me. It's a helpful tool and I love it!

Why it kind of worked:

It works for new posts, however, with old posts all you will get is a blank page. That's because my third-party domain, www.jamesparadie.com is no more. So, that domain does not exist, which means when someone clicks on something with that domain on it, it has nowhere to go now. It's a pain in the ass, but that domain company was an even bigger one. They were expensive too. I'm glad to be rid of them. Even more happier to not get their 10 time daily emails too!

It's a little bit of pain in the ass, but oh well. The www.jamesparadie.com links will not work anymore, but all is well and everything is still there just you need to use the old domain name (delete the www.jamesparadie.com part, replace it with scaredsheetlessncn.blogspot.com. You're good to go.)

Anyway, this will be the last post before we go 24 hours on Halloween! Quite excited for that!

The Ghost in the Wrong House by SpookyLady InSanDiego

“My auntie used to hear footsteps every night coming up her garden path,” said my friend Rose. “Keys would rattle in the door and the door would squeak open…exactly 10 minutes before her husband came home from work.” Rose said this nightly ritual lasted for years.

One night Rose’s aunt was in bed and heard the sounds she’d become so accustomed to: the footsteps, the rattling keys and the door opening. This time it was different: As she lay in bed, Rose’s aunt saw the apparition of a man walk into her bedroom – and disappear right through the wall.

The next day Rose’s aunt told her neighbor about her strange experience. The neighbor’s bedroom was directly on the other side of her aunt’s. The neighbor said she also experienced something strange that night, but it never happened again – to either Rose’s aunt or her neighbor.

Rose’s aunt found humor in the situation. “All those years he was coming here, and he really meant to go next door!” she joked.

Holy Holy Holy: The Altar of Judgment and The Witches Well by Chris Chaos

Mount Holly, New Jersey

Does Holy Holy Holy hold the Jersey Devil? The Witches Well: There was a legend that the Jersey Devil is sealed inside a stone altar on top of a mountain. This mountain is known as THE MOUNT in Mount Holly New Jersey. We went to this location several times, the 1st time we scouted it out and took many photographs, the 2nd time we went back and filmed some video.

Legend has it that the New Jersey Devil was chained up here and if you put your ear up to the metal door you can hear him thrashing around. Another legend was that this site was the capstone that went all the way to Hell.

Yet another legend goes that one of the 1st (suspected) witches in the area was thrown down this well and she survived the drop and clawed and screamed for help and cursed all those that threw her into the well. Later on the shed was built over the Well to stop the haunting that was occurring. Recently the township put up a barbwire fence with stop motion cameras that actually yell at you when triggered. "Stop! You have been caught on camera and this will be used in your prosecution, turn around now!" it states when you venture too close. Why would they spend all this money for this security? What is really here? Without breaking the law and jumping the fence you currently cannot reach The Witches Well, but you can see it through the fence that was erected. If you go in the warm months be aware of the mosquitoes, they are plentiful and very hungry.

There is also a gravestone located in the cemetery right near this area and a woman is buried there. The grave reads: “Thus is the fate of all who turn from God, you are here because God hates you.” This lady, who was a suspected witch, supposedly summoned the Jersey Devil and he killed her. Afterwards JD was caught and chained up and cast into the Well.

The Holy Holy Holy Altar of Judgment
Mt. Holly, NJ

A few hundred feet from the Witches Well and up a somewhat steep hill is the Altar that was used to judge the witches many years ago. The altar is a white (painted grey) concrete table (4 feet by 8 feet by 4 feet), It has the words “Holy Holy Holy” inscribed across it. In front of the slab are old wooden benches, set in a square. Much graffiti has been marked onto the altar and tales of modern day sex magic and animal sacrifices have taken place here. Right next to the altar is the gallow that they used to hang the witches with, but it has been long knocked down and only the stump remains.

On October 22, 1730 over 300 people had gathered to witness the trial of two people, a man and a woman, who had been accused of witchcraft. The charges included "making their neighbors sheep dance in an uncommon manner, and with causing hogs to speak, and sing Psalms, to the great terror and amazement of the King's good and peaceable subjects in this province." This took place 40 years after the famous witch trials in Salem, Mass.
We took video and photos of both locations, but nothing out of the ordinary occurred while we were there. We hope to go back at night and see if we obtain different results.

UPDATE: May 2013

We went back to this location in May 2013 and it really has changed. Someone redid the path leading from the street up to the HOLY HOLY HOLY ALTAR and it is now smooth and mulched and there are now park benches in front of the altar. The witch (that was buried outside of the cemetery) along with her grave and markers are still there. It seems that the community is tired of the kids going up there and “doing things they should not be”, so they are trying to make it a bit more touristy and to demystify the legends that surround this location. The area appears friendlier to the average person but is still mostly only known to the locals and those whom seek out and research these types of locations. In the Fall we plan to go back and gain more video and investigate a bit more to provide more updates. There are several trails spread out around The Mount that lead from The Mount itself, The Witches Well, The Holy Altar and the cemetery that we will also be investigating a bit deeper in depth.

Haunted House/Halloween Party Soundtrack 2015

What's up fellow frighteners? We're only a couple days away from Halloween and I decided that I'm going to post my personal picks for the perfect haunted house or Halloween party soundtrack.

First up on the list is Legacy of Darkness by Nox Arcana. The thing about Nox Arcana is that they always have a theme with every album they put out. Blackthorn Asylum has to do with ... Care Bears. Yep. Totally. Honestly though, this whole album makes for a perfect haunted house, but this track right here is perfect for playing outside before people enter your house of horrors!

I already share this soundtrack on Scared Sheetless before, but seriously, it's a great track.

You need some metal in your Halloween mix. Heavy metal is the perfect music for the time where demons burst out of Hell and the dead come back to life to feast on the living. And who better than the Prince of Darkness? Nobody. That's who. And you gotta give it to Ozzy, because nobody can headbang to the Charles Manson murders, but he can.

I dare you to listen to this with the lights off. Double doggy froggy ... groggy ... dare you!

*I couldn't help but to laugh at double doggy. I know we all used to say it as kids, but it sounds so dirty now! HA!

"Feed my Frankenstein! Hungry for love and it's feeding time. Baby woohooo Oh yeah! Feed my Franken--" Sorry. You gotta love Alice Cooper. Before Rob Zombie came, Alice was freaking audiences out everywhere with his epic horror stage shows. Though such classics as Poison, Eighteen, and of course Schools Out are classics. Feed My Frankenstein is my thing! Which reminds me ...

We're not worthy! We're not worthy! We're not worthy! (Finally. I can use a Wayne's World reference on here!)

For the next song, I have to use special three special words. You know me. I love this movie and you had to see it coming. So, without further ado ...

Beetlejuice ...

Beetlejuice ...

Apple juice ... ah, damn it.

Beetlejuice and dubstep? Totally serious. I'm not into dubstep, but I do love this modern of the classic Danny Elfman score. It includes old elements, new elements, and sound bites from the movie and even the cartoon!

You didn't think I wasn't going to have a Ghostbusters track on here, did you? I don't listen to much hop hip ... hippidy hoppity ... whatever. But I do secretly love the Ghostbusters II soundtrack and this is probably my favorite track.

Next up is Frost by Enslaved. I first heard this track off of the brutally metal video game, Brutal Legend, and have loved it since. It's like a winter wonderland turned into a nightmare.

And the track you ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO HAVE on your Halloween spooktrack is ...

Was the Jersey Devil Finally Videotaped/Photographed? by Chris Chaos

Out of all the cryptids from around the world, the Jersey Devil is the one with the least amount of video, photographs and physical evidence concerning him.

Anytime news hits involving the Jersey Devil my inbox and notifications go off like crazy, especially this time of year when the activity increases due to the proximity to Halloween. I have spent the last few years, from November of 2002 till now, researching, exploring and compiling information concerning the Jersey Devil and the results will be released on October 31st, 2015 in a book medium, "THE SEARCH FOR THE JERSEY DEVIL: Revisited" and in a documentary film, "THE SEARCH FOR THE JERSEY DEVIL".

Today I received messages from multiple sources making me aware of the following two new updates to the Jersey Devil legend. One was from NJ.com and the other was from Weird NJ.

Cover of the book, "THE SEARCH FOR THE JERSEY DEVIL: Revisited"

On NJ.com's website [1], October 12th, 2015 it was reported that Dave Black of Little Egg Harbor spotted what he thought was the Jersey Devil. he snapped a few pictures but only one came out. Here is an excerpt from the story from NJ.com by Kelly Roncace:

".......Dave Black of Little Egg Harbor Township was driving home from his security guard job in Atlantic City when he saw what he thought was a llama running in and out of the trees lining the road.

"I was just driving past the golf course in Galloway on Route 9 and had to shake my head a few times when I thought I saw a llama," he wrote in his email.

What happened next is the bizarre part.

"If that wasn't enough, then it spread out leathery wings and flew off over the golf course."

Um...what?!

Black said he grabbed his cell phone and snapped off a few photos, but only one came out.

The creature quickly disappeared, he said, and left Black wondering.

"Either my mind is playing tricks on me or I just saw the Jersey Devil," he wrote.

After his encounter, Black said he stared at the photo for an hour trying to come up with an explanation for the image he had captured, before deciding to share it with NJ.com and its readers.

"Thought I'd send it in for you to share," he wrote. "I'm not looking for anything in return, just thought someone else could maybe explain this in a more rational way."

Before I could write about his experience and print the photo, I had to be sure he was sincere.

Dave Black's photo of what he claims to be of the Jersey Devil

"Yes, I swear it's not Photoshopped or a staged thing," Black responded when I asked if he was willing to let me use his name and state that the photo he sent was not manipulated in any way. "People have said it's fake, but it's not. I'm honestly just looking for an explanation for what I saw."

Being a paranormal investigator, I'm very skeptical and need proof before I believe in anything that could be considered paranormal.

The photo, if it truly has not been messed with or wasn't set up, is quite...interesting.

You can clearly see wings on the creatures back and horns on its head. Its feet are cloven and the fur is dark brown.

And it's obviously off the ground.

I don't see any wires or string holding it up like a piñata.

However, what is it?

"The mind plays tricks on you," Black admitted. "A friend suggested that maybe it was an animal running and an owl grabbed it, the photo being a combination of them. That's still not my first instinct, but I don't know how to explain it otherwise."

His final statement on the incident was simply, "I think I saw a large, flying mammal about the size of a deer."

Weird NJ received a letter from one of their readers named Emily Martin, the following is an excerpt from the letter [2]:

“I realize this sounds crazy but I saw a red animal with a long neck and horns. I swear on my mother’s grave, this is not a joke. I pulled over to take a video and as I started filming it got on its hind legs and flew away. I am an middle school teacher but moonlight tutoring algebra for high school students. Was driving home from an appointment on Old Port Republic Rd in Leeds Point when I took this video. So excited, had to share with someone. I searched online and a few others have similar stories. Channel 12 posted a photo online of it.”

Banging on the Walls by SpookyLady InSanDiego

My friend Rose told me this story about a house her family owned in England:

The house had been in our family for years. After my older siblings had all left home it was only my mother and I. I was about 10 or 11 years old. My mom had recently gotten engaged and we were about to move to a very rural town to live with her new husband and I wasn’t one bit happy about it.

It was quite a big house with four bedrooms; my mother and I shared a room with two single beds. I would always go to bed before she did. She was very creative and sometimes sculpted from wood or clay or would paint. I always felt comforted knowing she was there.

One night I was sleeping when I a loud banging woke me up. I thought perhaps my mother was mending her shoes, nailing a sole onto the shoe or making noise while sculpting. When the sound continued I realized it was coming from the bedroom walls! I got scared and went downstairs to see what my mother was doing. As I reached the bedroom door I saw my mother coming up the stairs. She thought I was making the noise! “I thought it was you!” I said to her.

The banging was so loud and the walls started shaking that it reminded me of the old movie The Haunting. The sound was coming from the room that used to be my sister’s. My mother and I stood outside the door, huddling together and scared to open it. Suddenly the banging stopped.

We gingerly opened the door and looked inside. We thought for sure the room would be completely destroyed…but everything was in its place.

After looking around and finding nothing wrong we went back out and closed the door. As soon as we did the banging started again! I don’t think I’ve been more scared in my life. When the banging stopped again we opened the door – to the same result: nothing appeared to have been moved. Exhausted, my mother and I laid together in the same bed until the banging stopped…which was around 6 AM.

Later that day we went to our neighbor’s house and asked them if they heard the banging. Though the house was a duplex with adjacent walls, they hadn’t heard a thing.

The only thing I can think of is, perhaps a spirit didn’t want us to leave after our family had lived in the house for so long. We moved out shortly after. I will never in my life forget the sound of that banging.

Right?!

I Bet He Thinks He IS the Circle of Life

The Atco Ghost by Chris Chaos

Atco New Jersey.  There has been a story circulating in the area for decades, a ghost story, a fable, legend...but is it based in truth? Atco is named after the Atlantic Transport Company. Or was it named from an old Indian word for "Land of Many Deer"?

Legend has it that many years ago, on Christmas night, a young boy was chasing his basketball into the street and was hit by a speeding car, whose driver may have been drunk, killing him instantly. The driver decided to run for fear of what he just did, he had to perform a U-Turn since this road is a dead end. The person in the car had to pass the body of the child that he just hit. Hence why it is part of the legend that you must drive to the gate of the sewer plant and then turn around.

[1]

Alternative stories state that a truck leaving the factory at the end of the road hit the child after he ran into the street chasing his ball he just received on Christmas.

On Burnt Mill Road in Atco they say that under VERY specific circumstances, you can see the ghost of this boy playing in the street. The legend states that if you go to Burnt Mill Road in Atco NJ at midnight and park three telephone poles away from the opening in the fence of the sewer plant (where a crack splits the road from one side of the road to the other) and face the area in front of the house (approx the 500/600 "block") and honk your horn 3 times, blink your headlights 3 times and wait....and IF the conditions are right, you may just see a little ghostly boy run into the road chasing the ball in slow motion. Some say that if you turn off your car and walk about 20 feet away you might see the boy appear and look into the car to see if it was the one that killed him. There supposedly have been many eyewitness accounts attesting to this over the years, but many of the people telling the story state that they have not seen anything but...their cousin, brother, uncle, or whoever has seen the ghost of this boy.

[2]

Burnt Mill Road comes off of the Old White Horse Pike and leads to a sewer plant and then promptly fades into a dirt road (that used to be traveled by horse and wagon) and now only an ATV could traverse, finally ending into Fleming Pike near Sandy Causeway. There are many interesting sounding names in the Pine Barrens, here we have Swamp Road Wild Cat Branch and the Sleeper Branch. If you follow the various soft sanded roads you could find yourself on Rt 206, along the Mullica River or on your way to Batsto.

Atco, in the middle of the Pine Barrens...Atco Raceway [3]..people like to drive fast. Burnt Mill Road is a long straight road that cars can build speed and maybe inspired by any of the race movies of the time, people were testing their mettle along this road and set the process into motion to create the legend of the Atco Ghost.

Despite all that is contained within the legend of the Atco Ghost, there was never any record of a little boy being hit by a car (or truck) on Burnt Mill Road, and killed.

"The only ghost around here is Holy!" from the sign in front of the Atco Assembly of God [4]

For my personal experience with the Atco Ghost...in the late 90's a friend of mine familiar with the story and with the area took me to Atco one late night so we could try and experience the legend ourselves. We followed the rules and waited...and waited...and waited...and waited....but nothing happened.

"On Friday the 13th 2006 I went in search of The Atco Ghost on Burnt Mill Rd in Atco NJ. I didnt realize I had caught it on film until I reviewed the tape. The ghost is a little boy that was hit by a car when he was crossing the street chasing after a ball."

In an interesting sidenote..when I was doing research for The Atco Ghost I was using Google Maps to track down the exact location of where you are supposed to perform the tasks to get the little ghost boy to appear....can you guess what the address is for the exact locations? ha

In the coming weeks we plan on going back and investigating further.
